Becoming a Member
Membership is by invitation only, following a peer review selection process.
All ordinary members may nominate scholars for election according to an annual cycle. The criteria for membership and the procedures are described on this page

Only those candidates for whom a nomination has been submitted as described and following the procedure can be considered.
THE 2011 nominations cycle is now closed for new nominations. It will re-open on October 1st 2012. The CLOSING DATE for submission of 2012 candidate dossiers will be 31st MAY 2013.
Elections take place during the annual meeting in September 2012.

Membership
There are 20 academic sections [1].
As at 24 April 2009, the total number of members (active) was 2,161, of which 8% were women (171); 33% were aged 75 years of age and over (711), and 7.5% were years of age and under (162). At its most recent meeting, the Council elected 120 people, of which 25% were women. The AE has a span of 35 european countries and 8 non-European countries.
As at 24 August 2010, there were 2,205 active members, of which 8.5% were female and 35% were over 75 years of age.
The distribution by country was:
[1] As of September 09, Social Sciences was split creating two additional new sections: Law; Economics (including Economic History and Management Sciences); Social Sciences (now including Sociology, Education, Geography [Social and Economic aspects], Demography, Political Sciences and Social Anthropology). From 2011 a new section—Applied and Translational Biology—was established.
After election, individual scholars are invited to accept membership. Only when this invitation has been accepted are new members allocated into discipline based sections.
