The __[Earth and Cosmic Sciences Section|Acad_Main/Sections/Earth_cosmic_sciences]__ of the AE is organising a field trip to Cardona, a town about an hour away from Barcelona which features the [Salt Mountain Cultural Park|http://cardonaturisme.cat/en/visit-cardona/salt-mountain-cultural-park] in connection with the Academia Europaea 26th Annual Conference, 16-18 July, 2014.
\\ \\
Cardona’s Salt Mountain Cultural Park is located at an old mine, and it provides visitors with an opportunity to see Cardona’s saline outcrops and its outstanding natural resources and mineral heritage, which makes this area a truly unique place in the world. Geology, mineralogy, botany and history come together here in a place where man has exploited rock salt since Neolithic times until the industrial age.
\\ \\
[Dr. Jaume Vergés|http://www.ictja.csic.es/index.php/permanent-researchers/62-verges-masip-jaume] from the Institute of Earth Sciences Jaume Almera, CSIC, Barcelona, will be the leader of the trip. He is a specialist of fold and thrust belts including the Pyrenees.
\\ \\
Dr. Vergés writes: "''We will visit the Salt Mani and afterwards we will climb to the top of the Cardona Medieval castle tower to make an explanation about the Ebro foreland basin betwen the Pyrenees and the Catalan Coastal Ranges mountain chains and to stress the link between sedimentation and tectonics during the Eocene Salt Event at 36 million year ago. All this before Lunch at the Medieval Refectory of the Cardona Castle.''"
