!!Joost G.J. Hoenderop - Biography
\\
Joost Hoenderop's background is in molecular-biology and physiology and he obtained his PhD degree in Medical Science at the University of Nijmegen in 2000 (cum laude) on the molecular basis of renal calcium handling. As PhD, he identified the epithelial calcium channel (TRPV5), which is the gatekeeper of calcium transport in epithelia present in kidney and intestine. Subsequently, he generated TRPV5 knockout mice as EMBO long-term postdoctoral fellow at the Institute of Pharmacology and Toxicology at University of Lausanne, Switzerland. He was a member of the Nephrology Committee from the International Society of Nephrology. In 2010 he became a member of the The Young Academy of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. Hoenderop is a recipient of the prestigious EURYI 2006 award. In July 2010, he was promoted to full professor in Molecular Renal Physiology and in 2014 he became chair of the Renal theme at the Radboud University Medical Center.

His group is based on a dynamic international team of researchers consisting of Post-docs, PhD students and technicians (www.physiomics.eu/ion-transport/our-people). Over the course of his career, he built up a substantial knowledge base and infrastructure in the field of molecular and cellular physiology of epithelial electrolyte transport. His team has studied epithelial transporters in great detail while working on various projects financed with grants from European Science Foundation, European Union, Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research and the Dutch Kidney Foundation. The knowledge of the physiological and cellular regulation of these transporters in health and disease obtained through these projects illuminates how critical these proteins are in the human body. He is active in several strong international collaborations, chair or (board) member of several national and international committees. Hoenderop (co)authored more than 250 peer reviewed papers and 10 book chapters.\\ \\
